Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust uses CLEO EPS to enhance remote prescribing and patient experience
Background
The Pharmacy team at Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust (RUH) has successfully introduced CLEO Systems' electronic prescribing solution, CLEO EPS, within its neurology and gastroenterology outpatient services and is now expanding its use into Same Day Emergency Care.
The Trust began using CLEO EPS in January 2026 within its neurology and gastroenterology outpatient services, with the aim of improving both the patient and prescriber experience. The team wanted patients to be able to access medication more quickly and conveniently without needing to attend the hospital in person, while also creating a more efficient prescribing process for clinicians.
Problem
CLEO EPS is a clinically safe electronic prescribing solution that provides quick, seamless prescribing and enables prescriptions to be entered and sent electronically to a pharmacy of the patient's choice.
Prior to the introduction of CLEO EPS, patients often needed go the hospital to collect prescriptions or medicines, even when their consultation had been delivered remotely. The team identified an opportunity to create a more convenient and efficient service by enabling truly remote prescribing and dispensing.
The Solution
The introduction of CLEO EPS has delivered significant benefits for both patients and clinicians. Patients receiving care remotely no longer need to travel to Bath to collect their prescription. Clinicians also benefit from a more efficient prescribing process, reducing administrative tasks and making it easier to access and manage repeat prescriptions. CLEO EPS removes the need to handwrite patient details such as addresses and dates of birth and enables previous prescriptions to be easily retrieved for repeat attendances. The system helps streamline prescribing and save valuable clinical time.
"The project has been a great success and we have achieved our aim of enabling patients to access prescribed medication when and where they need to. Of all the systems I've encountered recently, CLEO is one of the simplest to use and most intuitive. It has a very minimalist design that makes it easy for users to understand and progress through the prescribing process. Prescribers have also fed back very positively."
The Results & Benefits
Following the successful rollout in outpatient services, the Trust is now extending the use of CLEO EPS into its Same Day Emergency Care service. Fourteen prescribers have been trained using a straightforward onboarding process involving smartcard access and a short training video.

One of the biggest benefits is creating a truly remote care experience. Patients don't have to drive into Bath to collect prescriptions, while prescribers are no longer handwriting patient details or recreating prescriptions each time. The system streamlines the process for everyone involved."
The expansion of CLEO EPS forms part of the Trust's wider commitment to improving patient experience, supporting remote care pathways and delivering more efficient digital services for both patients and healthcare professionals.
